The copper industry in Swansea, (at its peak around 1880) declined dramatically when countries mining the ore set up their own smelting industries. By 1900 most copper smelting works had closed down, with only one still in operation in the 1950’s.
Later, the Lower Swansea Valley Project of the 1960’s and 1970’s, reclaimed slag heaps and large tracts of the derelict land.
Swansea, finally removed much of its industrial heritage, together with land that was both an eyesore and an environmental hazard.
