The family left Rhossili when Edgar was a very young boy to live in the centre of Swansea, in Hoskins Place, off Lower Oxford Street, moving later to nearby William Street.
While his father worked at Weaver’s Flour Mill, Edgar attended St Helen’s Boys School in Vincent Street (1883 to1889), from the age of six until he was thirteen.
School was followed by a brief spell at The Castle Hotel (St Mary’s Street), Swansea and as a telegraph messenger boy at Swansea’s Head Post Office, in Castle Bailey Street (near Swansea Castle).
