The five arrived at their destination, the South Pole, only to find they were 34 days too late.
They found the tent of Captain Roald Amundsen, with the flag of his country, Norway, flying triumphantly over it.
The expedition led by Norwegian Roald Amundsen and his team had beaten them.
Scott wrote in his journal –
“Great God! This is an awful place and terrible enough for us to have laboured to it without the reward of priority…Now for the run home and a desperate struggle, I wonder if we can do it”.
